Spirited Awards Names 2020 Regional Nominees
Service Bar named among Regional Nominees in the East for Best American Bar Team
This year marks the 14th annual Spirited Awards, which celebrates the best of the on-trade industry.
With the majority of events and trade shows across the drinks industry currently being cancelled or postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation felt it was “more important now than ever to continue to honour the professionals, organisations and establishments that have enhanced the industry”.
Established in 2007, the 2020 Spirited Awards received the highest number of submissions across all categories.
“In unprecedented times, it’s more important than ever to stay connected to and celebrate our phenomenal community,” said Caroline Rosen, president of Tales of the Cocktail Foundation.
These professionals have worked tirelessly for years, honing their craft and, really, taking care of others. We are honoured to take this opportunity to thank them for their contributions. Congratulations to all of this year’s regional honourees.”
Tiki on 18th
Lowering Cocktails in Buckets is Just One Way D.C. Bars are Getting Creative Right Now
Brightwood bar Jackie Lee’s was one of the first D.C. dives to get in on the carryout cocktail game, with mule kits ($75) accompanied by two copper mugs. This weekend, Adams Morgan sports bar the Game and upstairs cocktail perch Tiki on 18th hopped on the to-go booze train, with large-format palomas ($33-$60) that come with a free Patron tiki mug.
The Game Sports Pub
The Best Bars that Opened in the District in 2019
It’s never easy to replace a neighborhood institution like Ventnor Sports Cafe, which closed last year after providing Adams Morgan with big screens and Philly flavors for a decade and a half. And while the Game ostensibly remains a sports bar, about the only thing it shares with its predecessor are the rows of flatscreens on the walls. Credit local mixologist (and co-owner) Jo-Jo Valenzuela, a native of the Philippines, for the flavors on the menu — sizzling, funky sisig; crispy lumpiang; the sweet-and-spicy Guavamansi soda that adds the punch to his gin-based Rizal cocktail — that attract non-sports fans to the basement bar, where they sit side-by-side with folks who are intensely focused on the TVs. The vibe is completely different upstairs, at a stylish lounge called Tiki on 18th, where bartenders whip up classic Mai Tais, Suffering Bastards and the potent Jet Pilot while customers chill on Philipe Starck bar stools. Open Thursday through Sunday, it still feels like an escape on 18th. 2411 18th St. NW.
